THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Social Relations in Chicana and Chicano Studies with an anticipated start date of August 2019. The position is probationary leading to a tenure decision. The University of New Mexico, located in Albuquerque, is New Mexico’s flagship institution ranked a “very high activity” Carnegie Research University that has also been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies (CCS) features an undergraduate major in CCS that has experienced double-digit growth in the past several years even as enrollments have declined in other fields. It includes areas of concentration in intersectional politics and social movements and in transnational perspectives, and has an M.A./Ph.D. degree in CCS expected to start enrolling graduate students in the fall of 2019. The Department’s tenure and promotion requirements include excellence in research, teaching and service, as well as service in local communities.
The successful candidate will find excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching, research, and program development at UNM, including the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute (which shares office space with CCS) and other cross-campus initiatives. We seek an excellent teacher and scholar who can offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Latinos in a Global Society, Introduction to Chicana and Chicano Studies, and social science research and methods. Duties include teaching the normal load of courses each semester.
Minimum qualification: (1) PhD in Chicano/Latino Studies or terminal degree in related social science field awarded by date of appointment.
Preferred qualifications: (1) research and publications that employ statistical or other quantitative methods; (2) a record of publication within the field of Chicana and Chicano Studies or related topics in other social science fields; (3) teaching experience at the university or college level including demonstrable ability to teach lower and upper-division courses in CCS;(4) ability to mentor undergraduates and graduate students at the MA and PhD levels; and (5) demonstrated commitment to community service; and (6) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
