Position description: The Education Department invites applicants
for a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment/ Assistant Teaching
Professor with a commitment to advancing bilingual education and
preparing K-12 teachers for bilingual
classrooms. We are seeking a faculty member who can instruct and
supervise preservice teachers in the Teacher Education Program's
Bilingual Authorization in Spanish Program. The responsibilities include
teaching courses in bilingual education and bilingual
teaching methods, working with partners in local school districts to
find placements for bilingual preservice teachers, and supervising
preservice teachers in their fieldwork. In addition, this faculty member
will ensure the program meets all requirements
necessary to maintain and grow the program, including meeting
accreditation requirements, supporting student and staffing needs,
fostering the expansion of program partnerships, and ensuring that the
course offerings meet the Teaching Performance Expectations
(TPE's) as outlined by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The
faculty member candidate will also instruct other courses pertaining to
bilingual education in the Teacher Education Program and the Department
of Education's graduate and undergraduate programs
as needed, and will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues
throughout the Department and School of Education to create courses
related to bilingual and multilingual education, and conduct research.
The ideal candidate for this position has
experience teaching diverse learners in Spanish-English multilingual
educational contexts and in preparing bilingual teachers. Ideal
applicants for this position have a
strong understanding of the historical and current contexts of
bilingual education in California, a broad theoretical knowledge of the
development of bilingualism and culturally and linguistically sustaining
pedagogies, and experience working in TK-12 educational
settings. We especially value candidates who actively center racial,
class, linguistic, and cultural diversity in their teaching and service
in order to prepare preservice teachers for teaching in a multilingual
society.
The Teacher Education Program (TEP) at UCSB
prepares approximately 90 preservice teachers per year to earn a
teaching credential in one of the following areas: multiple subjects
teaching (MST), education specialist
in extensive support needs (ESN), education specialist in mild to
moderate support needs (MMSN), single subject teaching (SST) in English
language arts, history social science, math, science, or Spanish.
Preservice teachers from each of these programs who
are bilingual in Spanish can pursue a bilingual authorization through
participation in the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish Program (BASP),
which involves coursework and fieldwork in bilingual classrooms. During
the pilot year of this program, one-fourth
of all students elected to earn this authorization. We anticipate
increasing demand for the authorization, and we look forward to further
developing the program to meet the growing need for bilingual educators
in California.
The University is especially interested in
candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the
academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate
to the position.
