Rafael A. Martínez is an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) in Southwest Borderlands where he teaches courses on the history of the Mexico-U.S. borderlands, the Southwest, Arizona, and Narrative Studies. He received his PhD in American Studies at UNM (2020), and BA from CSU Dominguez Hills in History and Chicana and Chicano Studies (2012).

Rafael self-identifies as an UndocuScholar – individuals who are conducting research, writing, documenting, producing artwork, and developing public projects from the lived experiences of being undocumented or formerly undocumented. He is the co-founder of the statewide oral history project, Humans of New Mexico and the UndocuTalks (a podcast on immigrant rights through an undocumented perspective).

Rafael has attended and presented at NACCS consistently since his undergraduate to graduate years. As a professor at ASU, Rafael began his service with NACCS in the capacity of the Rocky Mountain Foco Representative (2021-present). Serving in the capacity of At-large Representative would allow Rafael to continue to grow professionally and continue to contribute to the growth of NACCS.
