Chicana/o Studies Program
Eastern Washington University’s Chicana/o Studies Program (CHST), within the College of Social Sciences invites applications for a 100% Chicana/o Studies Coordinator for its Chicano Education Program.
While this position focuses on recruiting and retention of Chicano/a – Latino/a students, it also focuses on recruiting and retaining diverse students to the University overall, as well as within the College and its specific programs. Three primary areas of responsibility for this position include: recruiting new students, providing counseling and advising services which promote retention, and assisting with the variety of operational, administrative and outreach responsibilities of the program.
This position is also expected to support the university’s overall recruitment and retention efforts and assist in advising and support of Chicana/o Studies. In the course of performing the position’s duties, this position will have extensive involvement with students, staff and the public in carrying out program activities, and will coordinate, schedule and monitor program activities to determine consistency with program goals. The position reports to the Director of the Chicana/o Studies Program.

- Bachelor’s degree in Chicana/o Studies, Counseling, Student Affairs, or other related fields.
- Three years full-time relevant experience, such as working in higher education with disadvantaged or underrepresented college and/or high school students; work experience in minority affairs, minority achievement, retention, college preparatory programs, recruitment, and student advising; or other relevant experience;
- Must be bilingual/bicultural in English/Spanish (CHST students are mainly Spanish speaking)
- Be student-centered and have a strong sense of responsibility for student success;
- Be detail-orientated and organized;
- Have strong prioritization, time management, and follow-through skills;
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail and produce desired results;
- Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner both orally and in writing;
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
- Ability to take direction and possess the ability to work independently under general supervision to meet the needs of program;
- Ability to collect data and produce reports based on data;
- Knowledge of high school to college transition;
- Ability to generate ideas for new and modified first-year transition and retention programs for upperclassmen;
- Advanced computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Apple and other applications and technologies necessary for data access/retrieval and communications; specific experience with Excel spreadsheets and developing databases;
- Work with campus service units to disseminate information and encourage dialogue to improve cultural awareness;
- Ability to work with and engage a wide range of understanding and skill level of campus faculty, staff, and administrators in working with Chicana/o students and their families;
- Understanding of Chicana/o culture, and the ability to work with culturally and economically diverse populations, including first-generation students.
- Must have transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record

- Masters in Chicana/o Studies, Counseling, Student Affairs, or other related fields specific to working with students of Chicana/o descent and first-generation populations;
- Teaching experience and/or experience planning, designing, developing and implementing presentations/workshops;
- Work experience with students of Chicana/o descent, individuals of all ages and their families;
- Direct experience working with, developing, or coordinating retention initiative or related work;
- Direct experience or familiarity with grant writing.
